Hi Guys,

Has anyone fitted new Front Hub Upper & Lower Ball Joints on a D2. I think it's time to replace them and was wondering whether there is any tips or ideas that makes the task easier. Is this a difficult job to do and do I require any special tools to do it. Any knowledge and experience would be appreciated.

 

I've done upper and lower ball joints... The lower ball joints are a pain in the *** due to the shape of the control arm. I had to grind a set of the installation cups to fit the shape of the lower control arms to be able to get them pressed in straight.

 

Thanks TripleThreat, I guessed after looking at the RAVE it wouldn't be easy and you have confirmed my suspicions as it's a PITA. I'm in the process of upgrading all of the suspension and steering gear and I'll need to check whether the upper and lower ball joints really need replacing. I had the wife move the steering wheel a few degrees left and right firstly under power and then without power and I could feel a slight clunk in the steering system. It may be a ball end on the drag link or steering track rod yet. I'm basically renewing everything in the suspension and steering including fitting dynamic grade Polybushes all round. As the swivel upper and lower ball joints require stripping the brake rotor and hub etc I thought it would be good to do them when I'm fitting new springs and shockers at the front at the same time and also Polybushes.

 

I found this on Eblag which is supposed to make changing the ball joints a lot easier.

That's pretty much an identical kit that I used. Had to modify (by grinding) one of those cups to fit the lower control arm contour...

 

Hey..I just changed the ball joints of my Disco II..... there is a tool in Advance Auto... that it can be loaned..it has all the necessary adapters to do the job.. I has to apply heat with a propane torch.. and then use the tool..until it breaks and goes out..... just be careful.. not to much heat........

a real pita if don't use the proper tools....
