RE: front hubs
150k miles, same truck as the engine bogging problem. the hub groans loudly when backing up with steering wheel turned fully to the right. it is also slow to engage in forward geart, making an audiable thud thak is also felt through the floorboards and into the drivers seat. there are actually two distinct thuds, one when the pinion gear engages the ring gear in the front diff (which could also use a rebuild) and another when the left front hub engages. the right front hub seems fine. also, the hub sometimes makes an audiable clacking sound when rolling forward.

RE: front hubs
i personally havent done either of those checks. im new to land rovers, and i havent had this truck for very long, but judging by the condition fo some other maintenance items, it hasnt been done in a while. if you would kindly tell me how to perform these checks, i would be glad to do them, especially if they are a way to avoid having to replace my hub.
thanks, alex

RE: front hubs
There are a couple of plugs on the swivel housing, open the top one, if oil doesn't come out, add 80 or90W gear oil to top it off. If the swivels leak too much they will get noisey.
As for testing and reseting them, that you don't want to tackle.
Try toping of the fluid and see if it makes a difference.
Let me know,
Mike

RE: front hubs
you are referring to the plugs on the hubs themselves, and not at the diff, right?
havent had the time to check them yet, but judging by the buildup of heavy, greasy dirt on them they have leaked in the past and probably are still leaking. is there any way to fix the leak, or do i just keep up on the fluid?

RE: front hubs
You really should switch to LR's one shot swivel grease. It wont leak like 85w140 will (yes i use that here in 120+arizona) just put one tube in each of your swivel housings and then your set. By the way--technically grease has a shock dampening effect so it may be better in the long run if your going off road-and you wont have to worry about it piddling all over the trail.

RE: front hubs
I am concerned that you may have 2 problems, maybe hubs that need to be rebuilt and also some possible 3rd. member problems with a tired diff and pinion set.
If you want to talk about it, send me your tele number and I'll be glad to call you.
