excuse my ignorance, but where in the world is the canister? will like to trace that hose that goes to the valve...

The evap emissions control system layout illustrated on page 236 of my copy of the RAVE PDF shows the canister mounted on the inside of the right-hand frame rail about halfway back to the fuel tank.

More importantly you should have the hose coming up somewhere on the backside of the intake manifold past the coils.

Here's a picture of the purge valve set up in my truck that I just took a few minutes ago.

The service port should be on the canister side of the purge valve, in the hose that comes up from the chassis mounting point. There isn't much play in that hose so it looks like yours has become disconnected from it. As mln01 says, the hose to the canister goes down past the coils.
