Default fuel light goes on when tank is half full or full

I'm driving my 2008 LR2 and once on a while my amber fuel light goes on then the needle drops all the way to empty then the GPS shows out of fuel displaying closest petro station...
What's going on the tank is full I know I have gas I just filled!!!
Fuse???

Sounds like the sender on the driver side of the fuel tank came loose and is floating around.
