Default G4 Buying Help.

I have my eyes on a 2004 Disco 2 G4 84000 miles. I have had a PPI made and just wanted to get a gut check form the forum. Overall ist good. Small leak from the tranny. An oil leak from the Rocker Cover. The dashboard is lifting under the window. I was wondering if anyone could just give me their gut reaction :-) — or two seconds to skim the report.

I have an 04 D2 SE. You will need to replace the head covers gaskets to start. My dashboard is also peeling from the frame under the windshield, a common issue at this age. I you want it fixed, the best way us to buy a kit designed for that. There is info on the web. Expect oil (and fluids in general) leaks here and there, it is a Land Rover, they leak!! The tranny leak, don't know. Lift the truck and see if it is a crack or elsewhere something that looks serious. While with the truck up, look the state of the u-joints in the drive shaft, in particular the front one. The originals are non greasable so they go bad. If they have grease plugs, means that somebody already replaced them. If not, be prepared to replace them yourself.

Look for the service history. A well maintained, good serviced truck is a whole different animal than one that was poorly maintained, and thus more safer to get.

That being said, the 04s are kind if a bit better in general. They have the stock differential lock and the oil pump issue solved, for example. They are the latest generation of the D2 and the infinite wisdom of Land Rover got a bit (let me reiterate, just a bit) better on those.

When a LR D2 works good, they are fantastic, but be prepared to work on them!!! It helps to be mechanically inclined!

Don’t worry about the leaks! Plenty of time to fix that. You want a complete authentic. g4. None of the kit parts should be missing. Solid and rust free frame. Great paint work and clean interior. A clean car fax and all records.
Plan on doing Disci mikes 60 and 100k service list posted on this forum. You will spend a few thousand bucks to tidy up anything you buy.
Get all the keys, all the books and records and dive in.

I will look at the report if you want, just pm it to me or email me.

Biggest thing to look for is that engine is not ticking after startup (slipped cylinder), quite common on 04's.

Make sure CEL light is on during key on and off once started.

IMHO if they have ever spent time in the rust belt they are lost causes.

Looking through the pictures- what parts of its condition scare you off or give you concern? Brakes, headliner and driver seat bolster are easy repairs. The right rear panel wrinkle can be tended to. The frame corrosion that is starting is addressed with proper cleaning, chassis black preparation and waxoyl. If you are looking for a G4 to keep long term and fix up- you can spend on the repairs and dive in.
