Default Gear locked

I have a problem putting my discovery into Drive. I have to press the brake down with both feet to allow the shifter into D. Once I'm in Drive, the car functions fine. But to move the gear again, I have to use extreme effort to press the brake again. Any ideas? I'm afraid to get stuck in Drive like I did in a drive thru already. lol
Thanks
S

Sounds like the safety interlock switch is going, if you remove the bezel around the shifter you can see it and confirm it retracts. A bit of lubrication might help.

I suggest replacing the brake light switch. They're not expensive and they're not difficult to replace.

To confirm, check whether or not the brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed normally.

The brakes did not illuminate, so I’m getting a new switch. Thanks again!

Great. Any auto parts store should have it. No need to order it.

Just wanted to leave this diagram here for others. I was able to remove the old switch, reset it, and install. Everything back to normal. I will put a new switch in for 18 bucks just bc it's cheap.

Thx
S
