You can manually change from D to 3 to alleviate the problem. And at what speed and RPM if you are at, under low RPM and light throttle kickdown can be delayed unless you goose the gas. At hi-way speed I never have an issue only driving around town, we have some steep hills, right after traffic lights and no lead up, so sport mode or manually changing gears works best for me in those conditions

Is the downshift only initiated by load or throttle position?
If he was at a steady throttle position the entire time, it might explain why the downshift was delayed.

I'd want to try it again and add throttle and see if it responds better.

Adding throttle def. kicks it in. If I coast into the hill at 70 and try to maintain it, it slows, slows slows and gravity does its thing. Then I put the foot down and it powers up and shifts down.

If it were a manual transmission, I would have shifted to third by that time for it to take me up the hill w/o stalling.

All I am trying to do here is figure out if there's an issue or not - or if this is a normal disco 2 thing...sort of work out the character and sort it from the broken.

Sounds about right - I see you're from Mission too? . if you are, it happens to me on the stave lake street hill just after the school heading north. Also happens on Doyle heading up to Richards.

Other side of town but yea that hill is tough, sounds like you have the same problem I did drove stick for too long. I have to punch it or drop to 3rd on that hill too, if helps.

We can meet up day and compare if you like

I really did not see any difference with sport mode. I just drop it to a lower gear.

What size tires are you running? Mine became noticeably more sluggish by going from a 29" tire to a 30" tire. If you're running something taller, it will prolly be more pronounced.
