Default The Gods Must Be Crazy

After a recommendation from Phil (Spike555), I not only stopped going to the video store and bought a NetFlix membership, but I also made sure "The Gods Must Be Crazy" was near the top of our list.

I received it, but made the mistake of starting it at 1am on Wednesday night, and fell asleep about half way through (not because it was boring, just because I was WAAAY too tired to be awake, let alone to watch a movie). Anyway, I'm out of state on business again and I knew I'd have some spare time in my hotel room to watch the movie, so I brought it along.

I just finished it, and I am SO glad Phil recommended it. If any of you haven't seen it, you absolutely must watch it. There's definitely a healthy bit of (I think... 60s?) Land Rover usage, but 'The Gods Must Be Crazy' is so much more than that . There's nothing spectacular as far as plot, effects, or even humor goes, but it somehow masters all of those elements. The humor that it DOES include had my ribs sore (the shell ejections to the face and the faulty bazooka REALLY got me). In the end, the plot will have you wiping a wistful tear from your eye.

The single area where this movie truly outshines most others that I've seen is its characters. Each personality is developed fantastically, and you come away from the movie feeling as if you know each of them personally, and could approach him or her as an acquaintance. You see the real beauty of Africa, and a side to the continent that is otherwise untold- one without AIDs, AK47s, Diamonds, or drugs. Each personality, even the antagonist, all has at least a sliver of moral guidance- and the guy that we're really supposed to despise (the one that 'steals' the girl time again) is in reality a rugged frontiersman and well intentioned man.

All I can say, is that you absolutely MUST watch 'The Gods Must Be Crazy'. Don't expect to be blown away, because it is a modest film in the senses of drama, violence, and humor- perhaps as modest as the continent in which it is set. But it is this grace... this humility that will have you placing an order on Amazon for your own copy almost immediately after watching.

Pat-You should have let me know you were going to get a membership, I had coupons for a free month instead of the 14 days they normally offer.
I have been a member since Fed. 2003 and I get free rentals and special coupons for signing up new members.
I am proud to say that I have not been to the video store in 5 years.

I was on the unlimited 3 at a time, but when I was laid off we had to move it down to 2 a month one at a time, thats the $5 plan. We had two free rentals and 15% off so we couldnt put it on hold, one of the perks for being such a long time member.
We have 487 movies in ouir rental queue. We LOVE movies and tv shows.
We have HBO but we rent Showtime series when they come out on dvd.
We ususally drop the plan down to two at a time unlimited in the summer and then back up in the winter.
Here is what I do, when you get the Sunday paper, put the movies that are not released yet into your rental queue, when they are released they will become avalible for rent. I also put movies that are in the theater in the rental queue also.
We like anime, we also rent kids movies for the kids of course, documentries, old tv shows, like the Monkees, my wife loves the Monkees. Starblazers, I love Starblazers.
My 7 yr old daughter loves The Land of the Lost, remember that show?
Anyway, you can link accounts together and recommend rentals for friends. Thats cool too.

Awesome! So far I'm loving Netflix.

Is "The Gods Must be Crazy 2" any good?

I sure do remember The Land of the Lost- but weren't there two versions? I remember the one where that first-gen white Jeep Cherokee gets sucked down into the chasm.
