I know, I am a week late on the new year well wishes :-)

I am replacing the valve cover gaskets on my '01 Disco II. Might as well replace the ignition coils, plugs, wires & plenum gasket while in there.

A friend has a lift in his garage so he'll do the labor for me :-)

Is there anything else I should consider or need to get the job done? Any specific tools to make the job run smoother? I've read through most of what I can find here regarding replacing valve cover gaskets, which is my main priority.

If you haven't already, have a look at this video. It's a decent step-by-step.

You don't need a lift.
If anything, you need a hole to put it in so it's easier to reach the top rear of the engine.

 

Normal hand tools will do the job. You will need some extensions for the coil pack bolts and the front upper intake bolt. Wobble extensions work best.

The only thing that trips me up is the valve cover bolts. They require a very skinny, odd socket. Take a look at the ones you can see before you take it apart, or maybe someone else will chime in on the proper socket. I generally try five or six sockets when I get to the valve cover bolts and am so pissed off by the time I find the right one I can't remember what it is.

A torque wrench if you want to be correct.

 

You are so right re: the valve cover bolts! The socket head is either 5/16" or 8mm, but I don't remember at the moment.
BUT the socket MUST BE a 12 point or forget it.

Because it's easy to round off the heads of the bolts and the O rings get messed up, I always replace all 8 bolts. RockAuto has them cheap.

 

Yep, 8mm 12 point socket, but it also has to not have shoulders so it will fit down into the holes. A deep socket will work. I thin k I found mine at Sears but most auto parts stores will have them as well.

 

Use of lift or pit mentioned earlier...

If from Texas and long and tall, don't raise the lift too high.

Beer or joint for friend may help as well.

One real good tip from the video @ 25:45 is being sure the small valve cover gasket spacers don't get left behind.
Been there done that.... it SUX!
And INSPECT your new gaskets before you install to be sure the spacers didn't fall off.
