Default Head Gasket Advice

I go to pick up my new project 03 on Saturday. The PO said it was overheated and he thinks it has a cracked block but he is not a LR guy. I want to do the bare minimum on this truck to verify if block is cracked or just head gaskets blown.

Here is what I want to do and tell me if anything stupid pops out at you.

1. Get the cheap $86 dollar HG set from ebay (Britpart) with the stretch bolts.

2. Pull it apart, clean it up, don't do any decking - just put it back together with the included stretch bolts.

3. Run it to see if it holds.

4. If all seems good then go back with the Elring or Reinz gaskets and ARP studs, deck the heads and do it right. Somebody on here recomends the Cometic gaskets but I haven't looked into those. (Why is the ARP stud set $250 - they are just studs?)

If nothing else I will get alot of practice doing head gaskets.

I would imagine that I need to replace the thermo since it was overheated. Maybe the O2 sensors up front.

Does this sound like a plan?

I don't know that seems like a lot of work
maybe speak to a landrover shop they can pressure test system and might tell you if it's head gasket or block then you will be in the right path

I’d rather have the block tested as well, but it’s your time.

Well the nearest LR shop is a 3 hour tow there and back plus the privelege of paying $140 an hour to test.

I have time cuz I need something to do while I drink beer. I also have been wanting to do an HG job on one. I feel like I have been missing all the fun.

I'de fix it cheap, and if it works, leave it alone and drive it.

Go for it then. Just be careful you don't fall down that "while you're at it" hole...

I don’t think you need a Land Rover shop. Just find the nearest capable.

Dude the head gaskets are pretty straight-forward to pull....pushrod V8...just tear them off, inspect block, re-install, and make sure to shore up cooling system..

You won't know anything unless you deck the heads, which is cheap and easy for any machine shop to do for you.

Likewise, your machine shop can pressure test those heads while they are off. A cracked head is easier to replace than a cracked block.

About the same symptoms until you do the pressure test.

Also, you have to replace bolts every time you pull off your heads. Makes a lot more sense to do the ARP studs upfront.
