Default Head Gasket Job, what else should I do?

So my 04 Disco needs a new head gasket after taking it to a local rover tech. #1 cylinder head has a coolant leak.

What else do i need besides gasket kit and head bolts.. Should I replace water pump, thermostat and coolant? should i change to peak instead of the Dexcool?

Is there a better perfomance cam?

Just want to make the best of it while i got the heads removed..

Local guy quoted me 2300 with parts and labor for head gasket.

Any info is appreciated.

Thanks

Definitely a new thermostat, I suggest the 180 motorad thermostat. Definitely switch to peak. You can get a beefier cam shaft. How many miles? You could do a lot of stuff while in there. But you don't have to do that just to get to the heads. A head job could be done DIY over the weekend if youre mechanical and you got a buddy or two to help.

For about $300 in parts. Which leaves folding money for new stat (lower temp model), new water pump (jubo bronze impeller), Ultra Gauge, flush and switch to Peak. And a new flat screen (foot ball season is upon us). But the local shop is priced in the range of 1700 - 2300 normally spouted on the forum.

$2300 he should be giving you more than just a headgasket replacement, maybe someone else would know the going rate.
I would look to replace new t-stat, water pump, all hoses and belt, oil & filter, flush and refill coolant, new radiator cap, plug, wires.

If you want a cam now your talking about opening the timing cover case and dropping the oil pan. So if your that deep you should be replacing the timing chain and oil pump while your in there. Cam, lifter, timing chain oil pump theres another grand.

I dont think it is worth it right now unless you have a high milage truck

How many miles on the engine, if the plug wires have not been done yet, replace them with new 8 mm silicone wires.

I got my heads done and magnacore wires put in for about $2K. wish i could have done the work myself but i am a rookie at this stuff. got this work done at a shop that basically only does land rovers and i live in an $$$ part of the country. so 2.3K for just head gaskets seems a tiny bit steep but not outrageous.

I got about 80k on the truck. Just changed the plugs, wires, and shocks. I called around to lots of shops and some fools were trying to charge me 3k +. So 2300 is not bad, plus this guys is a known rover guy in my area of Norcal (San Jose), it includes resurfacing the heads as well.

So do the head gasket, resurface, water pump, thermostat, coolant cap, peak, serp belt should do it.

I cant find the motorad 180 for a 2004 disco. Would the PEM100990 from lucky8 work the same?

Im not trying to do it myself..

Don't do the job over a weekend, do it over a week. That way you can send the heads to the machine shop, and properly clean every part of the engine.

I did the headgaskets in a parking lot in Boulder, CO.

You can too!
