Default Head Gasket Replacement

After reading many posts about replacing head gaskets I still have a few questions. Here is a little bit of background about my problems: In August my engine overheated and I took it into a shop and they found the problem to be a loose connection that I was loosing coolant out of and I simply ran too low. They pressure tested everything and told me that my block and head gaskets were fine. However, recently i started hearing the whooshing water noise that people talk about underneath the dash and I became concerned. Sure enough my oil is foamy and I will be replacing the Head Gasket. I am a college student and cannot afford to have the work done so I will be towing the car home over Christmas break to try and do the work myself. So finally my question is, do I need to have the system pressure tested again to ensure that the block is not cracked? Also, how do I know if my heads have been warped from previously overheating?

My Disco had 118K miles on it and while I have everything torn down I was planning on doing some preventative maintenance, here's what I have on the list so far:

new water pump
resurface heads
timing chain

On my last major meltdown I had the plugs and wires replaced with heavy duty ones and a new serpentine belt installed. Thank You for any advice
