Default Head gaskets

Hello. I received a quote from a local mechanic that has a good reputation. No more than $1,500 for complete head gasket repair. That includes all parts and head bolts.

He said they will get the heads machined, and the machine shop will do a pressure test. So that sounds like he will leave the valves alone if there are no issues. Should i have them completely gone through, or leave alone if there ok? I am guessing its a much bigger bill for new valve job and whatever else goes into a complete rebuild.

I wanted to see if there are any issues, or i should bring up to the mechanic before i give him the okay.

The quote I just got to get the heads cleaned, machined if necessary, valves lapped and seats ground, they'll install my new valve seals was right around $80 each head. This is just to get the heads prepped and I install the gaskets, heads, etc.. From what I've seen on this board, around $1500 is about the going price. The reason I brought up what I'm having done is to show that apparently lapping the valves and griding the seats shouldn't cost much more. I guess a lot of the cost is labor with the gaskets, bolts, etc going around $300 or so.. But I'm a Disco Noobie so what do I know!

$1500 is not a bad price if you can't do it yourself. I paid around $1k for everything and helped/took photos along the way.

$1500 is $1000 less then everyone else.
That is actually very reasonable!
