Check the relays under the seat.

Did your Discovery come with heated seats or did you add the switches? Mine did not come with heated seats. I bought the activation kit, the light on the button lights up. But in turned out there were no heating elements under the leather.

Do both sides not work?
No way that I know of to tell if the relays are good or not.
If the passenger side works then switch relays from side to side, if it then works you need new relays, unless your wife likes a cold butt.

I looked under the seat of my D1 trying to solve the same problem. I found 4 relays corresponding to the 4 motors for the power seats. I never found a relay for the heated seats. Most likely the problem is that the heating element has an open section it and no continuity in the circuit causing it not to work. It is common for the heating elements in seats to break on the side closest to the door where your butt hits first as you enter. I actually pulled the seat cover on the driver seat in a Saab I had and soldered it back together and got it working. I haven't dug that deep into the Rover seat yet to see if that fix will work but I can't see why it wouldn't. Just make sure to wrap the repaired solder joint with electrical tape or similar to keep the seat foam from catching fire.

in addition to my heated seats not getting warm the compass in my rear view mirror is out.

is there a fuse they have in common.
no other issues that i can remember - the dome lights, dash lights, radio, windows, and climate control all work.

thanks

Did you check the fuse panel under the steering wheel? I'd look there first for a fuse for the seat heater before the engine bay.
