Help!!!
If your looking for 10K to 18K to spend I would be looking for a 04 Disco.
Before you go to buy one go to NAPA and buy a Block tester its 50.00
you add an oz of blue fluid to the tube then stick it into the coolant bottle with the engine running at temeperature, then suck some of the coolant bottle fumes through the fluid if it turns green or yellow there are engine problems and you should find another truck ( this advice is simple for any person to do )
So where are you located?? If you want help finding a truck i can assist you as i have been searching the USA for available trucks, i will bet i can save you thousands. I have seen nice 04 going for under 9K so take your time, and also make sure you have a good mechanic.
PS the link to the Yellow Disco has way to many miles for the price, you can find one with under 80k miles
Also stay away from the 03s as they usually go less expensive due to the oil pump failures and Rover isnt going to give you a new engine, it will cost about 10k for a new one from a dealer installed

Seriously, people can you honestly recomend that its a good idea for her to get a rover, she says she doesn't know much about cars and you are recomending her to get a block tester kit. We all love rovers, but we have to be real with ourselves, it is not a practical car for many people. They require more maitainence, have poor gas milage (compared to many vehicles), parts are more expensive, have crazy electrical gremlins. She doesn't seem interested it offroading, which is probably the main reason anyone would love or put up with the above things, I wouldn't own one if I wasn't using it to offroad. She is looking for somone to tell her they aren't as bad as everyone says, I often would argue that point, but I enjoy working on stuff. With that being said I can't in good conscience let her entertain the thought that "rovers are not as bad as everyone says". Rovers get bad wraps from people because they are normal people who want to get into their cars and they start everytime, and not worry till it needs gas or an oil change. Thats just not the case with rovers.
Now don't be hating saying my truck is reliable, I'm not saying a rover can't be reliable, they just require more money and maitainence than the average person is willing to put into them.
I think someone already mentioned to her to get another brand already.
BUT your assessment about the Rover has a lot of truth to it.
I think anyone that owns a Rover should also have a block tester in their tool box, its important as these engines are subject to headgasket failure more so than other makes of vehicles
If you dont have a good mechanic and the ability to pay him/her
Then you better have a good toolbox and know how to use it.
If cant meet either one of the last 2 requirements then you should look elsewhere for a vehicle.
It would also be a good idea to factor paying 5.00 a gallon for fuel as the fuel prices are sure to rise, and count on a solid 11 mpg from any Rover some may be higher but this is a fair average
