Default HELP!!! Disco Cuts Off While Driving, On;y Starts Again After. Cooling Down…

I have a 2000 Discovery 2 with 199K miles. Recently its been shutting off while driving. It will just lose power all of a sudden, even if you’re accelerating. When it cuts off, it will turn over, but wont start. However, it will start and drive normal after its cooled down for about 45 min.

Any ideas what might be causing this causing this???

Bad crank position sensor. You can pour water down the back of the engine on the drivers side and it should restart. Caused by faded reflective paint on the cover. Replace sensor and wrap cover in aluminum foil.

Hi, and welcome to the forum. This is a classic symptom of a failed crankshaft position sensor, abbreviated CKPS. It's a very, very common failure. There are many, many threads about this on this forum. This happened with my truck nearly 14 years ago when I had six Boy Scouts with me on the way home Sunday after a weekend camping trip.

I know nothing about your mechanical skills, but replacing the CKPS is a relatively easy DIY task, albeit it tedious. The challenge is reaching the electrical connector for the sensor, which Land Rover put in an almost unreachable place on the back of the engine.

I had my truck towed to the towing company lot, and went back a couple days later and replaced the CKPS myself. A parent had to come pick up the stranded scouts and me.

The AutoZone web site shows a CKPS this evening priced at $58.99. Don't be put off by the Duralast branding vs. Bosch. When I bought mine all those years ago the box said Duralast but the CKPS had Bosch molded into it.

This isn’t unique to LR’s either.
