Got the big kit yesterday and was able to get the lower ball in. Feels like victory.
And even with that it was a challenge to get everything right. I値l recommend only tackling this job with one, don稚 bother with the small one.
And shocked at how much force it took to get the damn thing in. All my strength on my breaker bar. Ungodly amount of force.
Did you try putting the ball joints in the freezer overnight before putting them in? Never done ball joints on a Disco but on pickup trucks and freezing them helps quite a bit.
Wow do I wish I'd read this before commencing with the job of replacing the ball joints, axle seal and wheel bearing on our new toy... But me being me, I just got on with the job & when I realised I was short a bearing press I simply carried on & went all redneck with a bottle jack, grinder & little 6 ton press.
If I'm honest the correct tool would've been less of an advantage than a bigger knocking stick to free the tapers, they just wouldn't budge for my 5lb clubs so I resorted to cutting through them & took the knuckle to the press to get some pressure on the stubs, they put up less of a fight but I'm still worn out & have packed up just short of the finish line, just the drag link, hub nut & disc/caliper to go back on tomorrow & should be good. Won't be doing the other side ball joints for a while though, thankfully they're not bad but I've got another pair as original plan was to do both sides. You don't need a gym membership working on Discos that's for damn sure!
Lol.
All sounds about right.
I was shocked to find the 25 lb sledge to be a useful tool for automotive work, but in the end, couldn稚 recommend it more.
I致e been putting off doing the other side all summer long for all the reasons you致e said. My fear is I値l have forgotten all the things I learnt on the first side by the time I get to it. And it so badly needs doing.
Too damn hot right now.
Good luck with the finish.
Yep I saw your comment about the BFH, it's more the sort of tool one would associate with either construction equipment/large goods vehicles but obviously would have it's uses around a Disco II as well! To my mind that just means they've made the tapers big enough & close enough tolerance to be nicely strong...
All done now anyway, took under 20 minutes once I'd got the tools back out & we're steering better now less wandery. Still have the 3 amigos though, but then I didn't think the knackered wheel bearing was the issue anyway as the ABS actually still works despite the light being on. I did look up the thread on repairing the modulator as I'm sure that's where the fault lies but the links there were all dead sadly. Just doing easy (well, less physical) jobs for today now as I'm still aching, so next on the list is sorting the non-op rear windows & fitting a decent reversing lamp or two. Cheers.
