Endurance is the problem...
Ok, I liken this to trying to teach advanced quantum physics to my 13 year old son... he could do it, just doesn't have the endurance.
I may not have the endurance. I do not expect my $3000 truck to run to 500k without any issues, I do not mind having to replace a HG or hoses, or waterpump, etc... every now and then. I wont even go into the electrical system. I know this is not my '94 BMW 525i with 240k, and rarely needs attention. But a new block at 120k, with multiple known issues that could be hiding in a replacement...
I love the truck, but I may not have the endurance.

I'm just at the point where I want to fix mine once and for all and never worry about it again. I also pull an RV with mine, so it's fairly severe service.
The point in my diatribe was simply that if you're going to go 1/2 or 2/3s of the way, with getting a block fixed and a sleeve replaced, you may as well go the rest of the way and make it as solid as possible. The other end of the spectrum is as I described above. For $1600-1800 you can get a motor out of a salvage yard in good condition and spend a weekend putting it in.

Fellas, I currently am rebuilding my 04' 4.6 due to low oil pressure which lead me to find bearings worn to copper. The engine has never been overheated and I've owed the vehicle since new. I took the block in for inspection and measurement and they found all bores .005 out of round.. Very odd since the pistons were all in good shape 3.699 and 3.700 is like new. The machine shop did not think this would provide me an engine that is problem free. So I end up buying a Turner Engineering block. Now for the Kicker, I'm searching the web and run across and article wrote by a writer interviewing a well known Rover engine builder who said that it has been found that factory 4.0/4.6 blocks have been found out of round by over .007. I'm willing to bet my block that is .005 out of round on all cylinders has been like this since day one and with new piston ring will be a good engine. In an attempt to try and recoup some of my 2000$ on the replacement block I'd like to sell my original removed block. It still is at the machine shop so if you would like any additional checks done on it this can happen on the buyers dime. PM me if you are interested.
