The solar sensor is tied in with the ambient air temp sensor to ramp up AC fan speed to help compensate for the sun beating down on your dashboard.
It has no effect on engine cooling, unless you have other issues, i.e. over charged AC causing increased evaporator/condenser temps, poor condenser fans, poor condenser flow.
I'd recommend taking it to a competent euro shop and letting them service the AC system, check pressures, check charge, check fan operation and condenser condition.

I ran the diagnostics on the climate control module and I got no codes. however covering the sensor defiantly prevents my disco from running hot and a/c overloading so there just must still be some issue in system.. I did put a used compressor on years ago so maybe its just not performing properly.. ironically it does work nice with sunlight sensor covered... its been long enough ive got my money out of the used compressor so I guess its time to let an a/c specialist take a crack at it again... the replacement compressor has worked but never was great... also I dont think IM hearing my compressor go off... been super busy last couple years so haven't had a chance to take car out of commission... maybe ill get a spare lol
