No kidding, a failed oil filter. Have you tried running the engine after replacing the filter and filling with oil? Just curious how much damage was done to the engine if any. Any strange or interesting new noises?

What failed on the filter, was it just the gasket?

 

To be honest, after rethinking the whole situation I believe the shaking was the drive shaft failing and some how the oil filter shook lose. Again, when I drove the truck onto the trailer I noticed a significant grinding noise that I only slightly noticed before at 25 mph. So I think I was extremely luck.

 

Like I said in my previous post it was probably the oil filter. I have never had it happen to me but I have had friends that have blown the filter gasket and puked the oil out. It will also cause it to loosen up depending on how long it was blown. At least it is not as bad as you once thought it was right?

As far as the drive shaft it sounds like you got lucky. If you had a shop rebuild it you should be able to have a warranty on it or something, if it was just you then at least you will know how to do it again.

 

The gasket from the old filter could of stuck to the mounting flange then when the new filter was put on you had two gaskets there. I've seen people do this in the past when I used to work at a general repair shop.

 

I have seen this happen too but, I've never seen one NOT leak long enough for you to make it very far. The ones I've seen blow oil like crazy, instantly!! The first time you start it up after the filter is put on.
