how to diagnose an intermitent crankshaft position sensor with a bottle of water
So you wife calls up and says the Disco two or the range rover just died while in stop and go traffic and she is stuck on the side of the road. It turns over but sounds like a bad fuel pump. Well to figure out if its a fuel pump, just take a nice large bottle of water and pour it on the crankshaft position sensor on the backside of the motor on the driverside side. For you right hand drive souls it would be the passenger side. Needless to say after pouring the water on the sensor it will cool it down. if it starts then presto its the sensor. This method can also be used to diagnose a hot no start condition on a freelander. just take out the cam sensor and cool it down with brake clean or some water,
you could also use a can of the compressed air for cleaning computers, just hold it upside down. You will get a "chilling" effect which should drop the temperture on the CPS, enough to fire the engine up. Of course this only if your stuck on the side of the road (or a Staples/Office max parking lot).
