@RoverPA probably got water in there, you might want to open a new thread, but what I would do.
  • Get some cheap gear oil stock weight or a bit lower is fine
  • Fill the diff
  • Block the front tires
  • Jack the back end up -jack stands please
  • Transmission in neutral
  • Spin the back tires a lot by hand - you are avoiding loading up the diff but want to mix the oils to get rid of any remaining contamination
  • Let it sit the spin again 3 or 4 repeats of spin and sit
  • While it sits check your breather and thoroughly clean the diff so you can see any leaks
  • Drain and fill with the good gear oil.
  • You should be good.

@RoverPA I had the same issue. Drained out the bad oil, filled with cheap gear oil, drove around for a week, then flushed again, filling with slightly more expensive gear oil. The second time I drained it it looked pretty good. Try and let the diff sit for a while (couple hours at least) before draining - that'll help the water settle to the bottom and come out first.

If you haven't already, grab some brass fill plugs for your diffs so you don't need to keep using the terrible plastic plugs - only a matter of time until they strip.

Welcome to the forum! There’s a ton of information and helpful people here (who are much more knowledgeable than me) - the nice thing is that if something goes wrong, it’s unlikely that you’re the first person who’s had it happen.

Yeah, it's a little more common to see milky diff fluid in the rear axle. Usually the rear axle sees more water; launching boats, backing into ditch to turn around, etc.

Changing the fluid a couple times should clear it up.
