How do I confirm CDL is locked? (light isn't lit)

It's funny in Moab, most of the Jeep guys lock the center diffs in the parking lots, so when they're turning to get onto a trail all you hear is the chirping and squealing.

why? just for the ease of it? I usually do not engage till I am in need,,,,,struggling/spinning/big slick hill/yadda yadda

That's just how Jeep guys are I suppose. You could do most of the moderate moab trails without locking any diff.

Most jeeps don't have center diffs. So if you want 4wd, you're locked all the time.

Some Cherokees and grand Cherokees do have some sort of full time 4wd. But it's usually optional, and most I see are part time.

On my way home from the train station, I engaged and disengaged the cdl. When engaged, I do notice the heavy steering that jafir mentioned. So, it has to be the switch or dash light?
