Default How far

How far has anyone driven a Discovery II, at one time, without a problem.

I dont know. But I think this is the wrong place to be asking that question. I love this forum and I owe so much to all the awesome people on here, but one thing Ive learned over the years is that more often times than not, only the owners who are experiencing mechanical issues join and post on these forums, while some members here take on the monumental task of offering advice on how to fix those mechanical issues. Believe it or not, there is a much larger crowd of Land Rover enthusiasts out in the world, many of which choose not to participate in online forums. Some of them frequently brave long expeditions in their beloved Rovers, and make it in one piece.

Im planning a cross country trek in April 2015 via my 04 D2. Been so nervous about catastrophic engine failures and anything else that could go wrong so I have been reaching out on different websites, talking to as many people as possible for their advice/insight on the matter. One older gent I spoke with has an 04 D2 and he says hes driven from Texas to California and back with no major issues! He has gone on several long journeys with Rovers ("since before I was ever born....") and I even heard him say "Rovers will last forever, just change your oil every 3,000 miles"! I thought for a second that he was on crack, to imply that our trucks will last forever. But maybe hes right, maybe all the negativity on these forums installs a false sense into our heads and now we live day by day, paranoid of catastrophic failures on our vehicles.

Im trying to cleanse myself of the negativity Ive acquired here and I change my oil every 3,000 miles or less. In April when I head out on the trek, we will see if all my efforts pay off or if im left stranded..... ill let you know late April how far Ive journeyed in my truck. Its a 4,500 mile trek!

90 MPH in your truck? With roof rack, lift, tires and gear?

Unless my maths is way out.

At 60mph average, which seems likely in the circumstances, it will take 75 hours to cover 4,500 miles.

7 hours actual driving a day. Couple of stops a day, snoozing etc. 10 days drive.

Couple of rest days, actually stop and see some stuff.

Call it two weeks.

Or am I that rusty?

I can see your trepidation.

Big box of spares. And an Internet connection!

I've done just at 2,100 miles in 2 days coming from Oregon to Arkansas. That was in my 99 when it had about 215k mi on it.

Well I know my truck has made it from Florida to Virginia before. Other than that, I'm not sure, but I trust my truck enough that I'm planning an 8500 mile road trip next summer that will span across just under 2 months. I guess we'll see then.

Thanks for the replies. The reason for the question is that my daughter, who will be off to collage next year, fell in love with the Land Rover during a trip to Great Britain this summer.

After a long search we bought a 2004 SE II , 3 owners, and 46,000 miles. After reading about some of the issues with the Rover, I was concerned with her putting it on the road. But it would seem that with proper maintenance the truck should do fine and not leave her stranded. She would be making a 400 mile ,each way , trip to and from Collage.

This is a great forma and you would expect to read about problems and operating issues here. However in reading between the lines it's clear the Rover is one tough vehicle , as long as you take care of it. I do plan on changing out the front shaft just to be pro-active. Thanks for the information. George

An 04 with only 46k is a rare gem. Be sure to switch to green coolant and 180 t-stat.
