I am humbled by having to ask instructions about how to perform this most simple of tasks. Then again this is my first time having to jump my disco and I suppose I am just as much of a fool for thinking that it would be a simple turnkey operation like all other vehicles I have ever owned. Anyway...

My Rover has been sitting for a couple of months and I tried to start it once every week or so to keep the battery charged. I failed at that task at the battery has since died. I just attempted to jump start it from another car and the alarm went off as soon as I connected both posts. Do I have to hold down some sort of disenagement of the alram or are you supposed to attach the jumper cable at another point other than the battery terminals. I looked through my RAVE manual, scoured this message board, did a google search and can't find anything to answer this simple question. I'm sure thats about to change, you guys are the best!

also, what is everyone's prefereed battery to use in these trucks should I have to replace mine?

 

Do yourself a favor and remove the battery and have a local parts store check it, if a new one is needed go 700 CCA rating or higher.
When you reinstall the battery, the alarm will go off so have the remote ready to shut off the alarm.

 

Hold down hood switch before tinkering with battery.

Buzz, I knew there had to be something simple like that. I'm surprised that no one else has made mention of this issue since jumping a dead battery is such a common situation on any vehicle. Then again, these PITA's are not just any vehicle!

Mike, what would my concerns be if the battery is done for and I am trying to jump it? Permanent damage to the electrical system in some way?

 

I have seen a lady's battery at work that was so shorted internally it overheated the jumper cables and they drooled molten plastic on her fender. I got her jumped off without her battery hooked up, and she ran on alternator only to the nearby WalMart for another battery.

Normally a bad battery just has a dead cell or two, and won't hold a charge.

The alarm system has a memory, it recalls that it is supposed to be armed (if truck was locked when battery went dead). Apply power, and it wakes up, pissed.

BTW, you have some nice trees in your neck of the Muir Woods. Our pines back here are "saplings".

For future reference, is there any unusual danger (to the electronics or electrical system and disco as a whole) in jumping a dead battery w/jumper cables in traditional post to post fashion (+-) on my D2 if say, the lights were left on or something simple like that? There always seems to be something abnormal with these beasts that I never encountered with other vehicles...

I had dead battery and tried to jump with Start function on battery charger. Alarm sounded and immobilized.

The remote function doesn't work on my key so I only have option to lock/unlock/superlock via turning key in the drivers door. When I had jumper cable on simply locking and unlocking did not seem to disable the alarm. RAVE manual does not seem to cover this. I have taken battery out and charging it. Any tips to deal with alarm/immobilizer when I put it back would be appreciated ?

Try the EKA code of 1515 (see tech area for immobilzation) - you enter code by using door key left or right, etc.
