Default Idle Air Control module: should I clean it out?

I have the intake manifold off the car for a valve cover job and noticed the IAC looks pretty nasty inside. Is it safe/advisable to clean it out, and if so, how?

Same question for the intake manifold itself – can I freely spray carb cleaner or the like up there in an effort to clean it up?

I cleaned one out with carb cleaner, and the inner workings moved much more freely afterwards. No issues noticed after doing it, but it also didn't fix the problem I was having.
