Default ignition key hangs when trying to remove

morning all- actually two problems concerning ignition key in 2001 DISCO. 1 out of 5 times when putting in park I turn key to turn off, attempt to remove key and it hangs will not come out of cylinder. Turn clockwise, electronics come back on, turn back off, making little push turn motion, key will usually come out after two or three of these actions.

sometimes, 1 out of 20, turn key on, start DISCO, engine starts but some electronics are not on, radio, a/c. Turn back off, retry, no prob, all on.

I've seen posts on park switch, steering column(?)somewhere, being bad, or needs adjustment. anybody hear of this problem or know where the park switch is?

thanx

Next time it happens take your hand and with your palm hit the gear shifter forward, so towards park.
If it is not going all the way into park it will not let the key come out.
If this method works let us know so that we can tell you what to do next.
If not let us know that too.

As far as all the electrics not comming on...I have no clue.

I had the same problem with key (not the electronics part) too! I would actually have to restart the truck and pull forward a few feet and then put it back in park and try again. I "squirted" dry graphite into the ignition switch and have not had the same problem since. I did it a few times over the course of a few days so as not to flood the switch. Don't use WD40 or any other liquid lube as that may cause problems. You can get the graphite from any auto parts store for a couple of bucks. Good luck.

Spike,

Please tell us what to do to fix it. Is it something about tightening a nut at the gear shifter? If so, where can I find a picture of this nut? I have this same problem...but have been unable to fix it.

Thanks,
Danny

Had a similiar issue in my 2004 Disco... unrelated to being in park or not... I think part of the issue is the angle of the keyway, and relatively tight tolerances, but lubrication was the other. I got a little bit of silicon spray and sprayed it in there... 8 months later, still haven't had the issue.

I am not 100% on this for a DII, but on a DI you pop the trim piece off of the gear shifter, tighten the nut a few turns and then replace the trim piece.
