Default can't remove key from ignition

Hello all. I'm new to this site and a brand new owner of a '98 Discovery. Well I got home after my purchase to discover I couldn't get the key out of the ignition. After several tries it finally came out. But it has been stuck several more times. I thought I'd figgured it out when after depressing the brake pedaland turning the key slipped right out while it it's proper release position. But I continue to have the problem. The ignition switch turns just fine and there's no problem starting the thing up. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is it linked to my shifter? I don't have a problem shifting out of park when the car is turned on. I went out and bought a new brake switch after a mechanic told me it sounded like it was a faulty brake switch.
Thanks for your help on this.

I had that same problem the other month. I think its linked to the antitheft system.

hey thanks for the input. However, I went back to the basics and tooka close look at my key, there appeared to be a crack in it. Went home, got the spare key out, stuck it in the ignition, and the damn thing works just fine. So bad key. I'll have to replace it.

oh, ok. After reading that i looked at my key and compaired it with the spare, a tooth was filed down on the original key.

I found on my brothers 98 Disco that it was the nut that holds the shifter on.
It had backed out just alittle.
You can remove the cover on the top of the shifter to see what I talking about.
Its not fulling locking into park.

I'm new to this forum, though I've and used it a lot over the last year. I realize that this is an old thread, but I have this issue (key is stuck - 97 discovery) How easy is it to remove that shifter cover? The entire cover or just the top of it? Do you know of a site with pictures of this process?

thanks,
todd

Just a week or so ago I read a post of LRO (Land rovers Only) were a person had this problem. They disassembled the plastic housing around the steering column. Once this was removed, you could see a little metal lever that was getting stuck and stopping the key from being removed. You could actuate this lever by hend and remove the key with the cover removed. The post had pictures of everything, but I could not find it again. Give that forum a quick search and see if you can find it again. That is if you think you don't have a problem with getting the shift leve completely into park...

Hope that helps!

If you look just the center of the top it pops out and
look under that, it does look like one piece but its not.

The top cover is all that comes off to get to the nut
that holds the handle on.
