If one spins, it is time to check the axle on the side that doesn't spin. You can pop the cover off the diff and spin each tire to see if it spins back to the diff. This will also allow you to check the front diff.
If he does that, it will drive off the jack. The only safe way to do that with the center diff locked is to put it on jack stands with all 4 wheels off the ground. Or at least one rear and one front, if it doesn't have locking diffs or TC.

But he doesn't need to. He knows he has either a broken front axle or diff. So all he needs to do is put the front end on jack stands and turn one wheel while someone holds the other from turning. If the propshaft turns, that axle is probably ok, unless you hear grinding noises when you're doing it (that could mean the broken pieces have enough contact friction to still make it turn). So he should pull the other axle, because either it or the diff is broken. You have to pull both axles if the diff is broken, so you haven't lost anything by pulling the other axle.

If it were me though, I'd just pull both axles and if one is broken replace them both and keep the "good" one as a spare. If one broke, the other has probably been over stressed, just not enough to break yet. And like I said, you have to pull them both anyway to replace the diff if that turns out to be the problem.
