Default INstalling drive shafts

Hi, everyone I am new to this website, my 99 disco II recently blew the front drive shaft, from the looks of the damages it looks like it banged the under carriage pretty good, I hope the transmission is not damaged. What I don't understand is that if the rear drive shaft is still intact like mine is, isn't the vehicle supposed to be able to drive on only one of the two shafts? I've tried shifting the gears from high to low but I am not able to get her to move. Judging by the massive puddle in my drive way can it be that she just needs lubricant ? I have been reading fromdifferent sources that the front shaftsbrake often in the Lr's .I would like to buy a chilton manual and take on the project of changing both shafts by my self. However, other than changing my brakes and doing other minor repairs I am not too mechanically inclined .Can anyone shed some light on the level of difficulty there is in doing somethinglike this and is there any special precautions I should take.

You should search through some previous threads. Try either drive shaft or prop. shaft in your search. There has been a lot of discussion on this.

Ok, I am scared to touch this one.
What color is the fluid under the truck? Brown/black means tranfer case. Red means tranny fluid.

The purpose of the diff lock is to lock the front and rear driveshafts together. With it dis-engaged, it works just like the axle on a car, with the t-fer case as the differential. One wheel spins-one shaft spins. The shifter not working might be a sign of the T-case being blown, I don't know. I am sure someone more knowledgable can help you out, but my advice is to not move it. Do not try to get the shifter engaged to drive anywhere with the front shaft off.

Good luck!

I would be the most concerned about the puddleunder the car - sounds like the flailing drive shaft knocked a hole in the transmission. Carefully inspecting the transmission case should be the first thing to do. The high/low lever is normally a little hard to move - are you sure this is not the case here? In order to attempt to drive thetruck with only the rear shaft you would need to climb under it and lock the t-case manually. Your '99 still has the mechanicals in the t-case to lock the center differential, but they are not hooked up to your high/low selector in any way. I am sure there are directions on how to lock you differential somewhere on the site. However, don't attempt to drive it until you fix the reason for the puddle that has formed under your car. Having it flatbeded to a LR specialist for inspection, is probably the best course of action for you.

Hijack - but sort of related [&:]
this is probably a stupid question or thought, but if one knew they were only going to be driving the LR on the street for say 4 months in dry weather, could you lock the center diff and drive around only using rear wheel drive in order to get better fuel economy then hook it back up for off-roading or winter driving?
Would this damage anything, screw up the computer or make any appreciable difference in your gas mileage?

Thanks for the advice guys. Based on the feed back I am recieving,I suspectmy transmission is damaged . I noticed the fluids all over the driveway are of both colors pink and very dark black. I goin to have a professional mechanic take a look at it.
