Default Interior Roof Light

Morning Folks ,

After months of trying to figure out why my front interior light would not work when turned on by the switch, but would work when door is opened, I was informed it should have an black earth attached.

The roof lining was replaced and when reinstalled I think the interior guys never connected the earth lead to the appropriate lug

Finally got round to dropping the front plastic shelf that sits above the sun visors and saw that there is a cable attached to the sunroof motor, black in colour

Now been told by a few people that the earth should be attached to the metal bracket for the attached interior light.

Have attached an image of where the watch is currently attached.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

TIA

If memory serves, yes, there should be a lug on the light that terminal connects to. Check the light and switch itself with a multimeter- mine was acting funny and when I removed it the leaking sunroof had caused quite a bit of corrosion in the copper traces which was causing my problems.

Thanks Greisinb,

Thanks for your input. I think the guys that reinstalled the head lining etc have fitted the earth cable to the sunroof motor instead of the light bracket ?

That would be odd, because the sunroof motor has to turn in both directions which is done by reversing the polarity to the motor, so it doesn’t really have an “earth” as such. Do you have the electrical circuit diagram manual? If not here’s a link:

If you look at the pic at the top of the message the black watch cable was attached there most likely in error. In will be removing it from there and attaching it to the interior light and fingers crossed it works

That black ground wire should be attached to a spade on the metal backing plate with the studs that the light fixture attaches to. I made the same mistake (connecting it to the sunroof motor).
