The "spider" sounds like the likely culprit. I will order the bypass today and install it as soon as it gets here.

I will let you know what happens........

Default Spider Replacement

Well.... U.S. dealers do not carry the spider bypass units. I ordered one from England. It finally came. I tore out my dash and, low and behold, there is no spider unit behind the center part of the dash where it is "supposed" to be.

None the less, the Discovery started just fine throughout the heat of the summer. We just had a cooler morning and it would not start!

Any suggestions on alternate locations for the spider on a 1997 Disco or other possible problems would be appreciated.

Oh, just for giggles, I replaced the fuel pump. No difference.

Have you found a solution to this problem? I am having a similar problem but my truck just up and stopped firing. Replaced the fuel pump cause I did not have the "noise" during the startup, replace the CKP sensor, and now have the relay and fuel filter on order.

Thanks.

Default No fix yet

I have not found a fix. If I keep the beast in the garage, it will start. If it is outside and it gets cold, it will not start.

I put in a new realy and that did not make a difference. My next option is to bypass the inertia switch in case that is somehow opening in the cold. When I say cold, I mean below 60F.

Let me know what you find.

I got the relay in and that was my problem. Then, after I got it fired up, it was hard to start every time that I tried to start it, did not matter hot cold whatever. After checking the fuel pressure and found that it was losing pressure almost instantly after being shut off, I checked the new fuel pump I put in. I did not have a tight seal on the tube that comes off the fuel pump fixture and it was allowing the pressure to bleed of very quick. Tightened it up and there ya go, started perfect the last few days.

Hope you find a fix as winter is coming and even the garage gets under 60F in the winter, at least mine does.

Try this, put a ice cube ontop of the inertia switch, let it sit for 5-10 min and see if it starts.
If yes then it is not the inertia switch.
If it wont start then there you go.
Buy a new inertia switch.

The ice cube trick worked.

Ice cube = dead
New inertia switch = live rover

Thanks everybody.
