Default it just stopped???

I just recently bought a 03 Disco II w/65k miles...long time Land Rover owner, also have an 03 RR

I bought my D2 on ebay and since I got it, it has ticked very loudly...Today I road tripped it 60 miles to go buy a boat all highway speed. Got to the guys house, hooked the boat up to the D2, pulled the boat 60 miles home....

Hasn't ticked again since....

any ideas's?..

The engine doesn't even turn over? Could be the Crank position sensor.

lol i think he's saying that the ticking stopped, not the motor.

maybe the extra fuel flow from the tow cleared out a ticky injector? or the extra stress melted a sleeve back solid in place and/or and most likely, whatever was ticking finaly broke off?

Lol, now that I read it again it makes sense. I initially read it as the engine just died and wouldn't turn over.

My '03 with 93k on the clock also does this. I regulaly tow a heavy trailer from Baltimore to Ocala in FL and after the tow the ticking goes away then maybe a month later I some times get the tick back until I tow again.

This scenario was described by anothermember recently, but the ticking did come back. This is his quote:
My family and I traveled about 200 miles one way to visit my wife’s family. I pulled my enclosed snowmobile trailer on this trip. I was at the end of my rope with this engine and just didn’t care anymore. So, I set the cruise at 75 mph and hauled ***. I was secertly hoping the engine would let go so that I could do a retrofit to a 5.3l Chevy. This was my plan B. No f****ing way was I spending $4000+ for another Land Rover pos engine. Well after completely rigning the crap out of my Rover for 3 hours, we arrived at our destination. I opened my door and was about to shut the truck off. Something did not sound normal. NO TICK!!!!! WTF!!! I was actually pissed! I fight and struggle with this pig and this is what cures it? Damn!
We cruised around for 5 days while visiting and made the trip home. Still no tick. Three days later, my nemisis reared its head. Tick tick tick…………. Welcome back a**hole! It is my theory that the extended heavy loads on the engine increased the cylinder temperature enough, for a long enough period of time that the offending sleeve temporarily reset itself into the block. We made this same trip unloaded several times before this trip and after with no similar results. It was only with the extended time and temperature resulting from a heavily labored engine that this result could be seen.

and hee is the thread:

I would suggest you flush the engine oil, sounds like the truck was not serviced properly and was gummed up.
Seriously consider doing my major service list posted at the top of this section, especially the front drive shaft if you are towing.

They tow boats and plenty of other things, not always in a safe manner, but with style.... unlike some pickups!
