Default Key fob won’t lock/unlock remotely

Recently purchased a 2003 disco. The vehicle came with the original key but the buttons in the key do not unlock or lock the vehicle. All the doors lock and unlock when you put the key in the driver’s side door and turn it. The button on the dash also also locks and unlocks all the doors. The light on the key turns on when you push the buttons but nothing happens to the vehicle. Not sure what may be causing the issue.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

My first hunch will be your micro switches are not working:

Thanks. I took apart the key and the micro switches seem fine (see below).

Hello, and welcome to the forum.

With all due respect to acg, the fact that the red light on the keyless entry handset lights up suggests to me that its not the switches.

Where are you located? There is a diagnostic tool called a Nanocom that can program the computer (body control unit, or BCU) to recognize the handset, although if it was once paired that shouldn't be necessary. If you're lucky there may be a forum member nearby who can pair the key to the BCU. Otherwise a good shop can do it with an expensive (~$12,000) diagnostic tool called an Autocom.

Are you absolutely certain the handset is original to the truck?

Mln01:
Yes, you are right.... I missed the part about the red light on the fob lighting up.

Here is the thread for renting the Nanocom if you would like to re-program the key to your truck:

First of all, you will need to open open your fob housing and see if there is a label with 6-character code pasted on the circuit board such as the picture example below.

If there is a label with 6-character code pasted on the circuit board, you can then use the Nanocom. Here are the videos:
