Default key problem

99 DII with 98k miles. When I brought the disco it did not come with the factory keys, two after market keys only. Every once and a while, when you try to start it, it will not. The lights in dash come on, but motor will not turn over. But if I move the trans. shifter up, the disco will start. Does the shifter need to be adjusted? I'm really at a lost, my wife missed an appointment today b/c she couldn't get the truck started. Help please. Thanks...

The keys have nothing to do with it, you answered your own question.
Pop the trim piece off the top of the shifter **** and tighten the nut a few turns.
Problem solved.
Your shift cable needs to be tightened, the truck does not think it is in park even though it is.

Yesterday I took off the trim piece from shifter and once I did I quickly realized my problem. The previous owner and allowed $5 in change to fall down there, and yup right in the shifters way was a 1987 penny. Which now is bent in the shape of a "c". The penny was not allowing the shifter to go all the way into park, thus creating my problem. Penny removed, and problem solved. Thanks again
