Default Key replacement

Hey guys,
The cylinder inside my door handle has seized up so I'm looking to replace it, but also get an electric key fob with it. I found what I'm looking for on eBay, but my question is whether I can have this key programmed to lock/unlock while using a different key in my ignition. Right now I'm just using a plain old silver key, and imagine any computer chip that would need to interact would still be close enough to my other key for it to work? Thanks in advance for the info.

Hi Liz,

There is an alternative to replacing the door handle that worked for me. Please look through my thread linked below, from 2017. It describes in great detail how I addressed the problem it seems you may now have with your door lock.

If you choose to not go to that trouble and instead replace the handle, then yes, the body control unit (BCU) in your truck can be be programmed to recognize the keyless entry handset you'd be buying.

The key in the lock does not have to be the one that you're programming. There is no RFID in these keys -- programming is done entirely by entering a code for the locking system.
