key won't turn in ignition
97 Discovery, Sometimes when I put key in ignition it won't turn. Steering is locked and key won't budge. It would only happen occasionally but has started to happen all the time. Any ideas on what the problem might be?
sometimes when you get out of the vehicle your hand or other part of your body will inadvertently move the wheel enough for it to lock... when you try to turn the key try to move the wheel left to right a little as you turn the key...
X2. When getting out or stopping the engine listen for a click from the steering wheel if it is moved. That sounds tells you that the wheel has been locked. It only needs to rotate about 5* to lock.
its a security feature, it locks so if someone hot wires it, they wont be able to steer it. when to turn the key, turn the steering wheel at the same time, it will unlock.
It happened with me about a year ago and it eventually reached a point that the key wouldn't budge. Period. I had to order a new switch from Land Rover that would work with my key. That was necessary because the keyless lock buttons are on the key.
sounded like a key lock issue to me. happened the first day i owned my rover. most rigs lock, but the rover locks for no good reason. just turn the wheel a bit and all should be well.
