Default knock sensor

my hawkeye tells me that I have to replace my knock sensor.
is this one of the sensors that should only be replaced with a factory part, like the o2 sensors or is aftermarket alright?
is this some thing that has to be done ASAP or can it wait until the weekend?
What exactly does a knock sensor do?

I got a knock sensor from Napa and it seems to work fine, I've had it installed since '09, and no complaints yet. I drove with a bad knock sensor for awhile, but my gas mileage and pickup was absolutely terrible. The knock sensors let your ECU know how far it can advance the timing on the engine, but if the knock sensor is faulty, the ECU will pull the timing way back into a beyond-safe level, kind of like a safety mode. I think it took me a whole 30 minutes to replace mine, and that was taking my time. Just remember that there's 2 of them, so don't replace the good one and leave the bad one I don't remember the torque settings on it (they're in the rave), but don't torque it down too tight or you'll crush whatever is inside of it, killing the sensor.

I also bought one from adavance auto and it was an exact match to the one that was already on it. I got it for $20 but they had to order it. Like said above it was really easy to replace.

J/K...A knock sensor allows the engine to operate at peak performance as it trims fuel consumption...

Yea, but why would you want too know. Isn't it better to not even know about it. One less thing to worry about, right.
