Question Knock or Tap... Need Help!

Hey Guys, I have a 2001 Disco II with 170k. On my way home it started to knock or tap and got louder as I accelerated. I'm 1500 miles on my last oil change and I checked the oil and it looks good. I crawled underneath and the noise seems to be louder near the catalytics and oil pan. When I tap on the exhaust it quits a bit but not much. It sounds like a knock or tap and when it's in park and I rev the engine the knock/tap/rattle smoothes out. I drove around the block and it drives perfect. No check engine light or oil light.

Any Ideas??

My first thought is oil pump.. I bought the Disco II with 40k and haven't changed it.

Any help would be much appreciated...

I have the exact same issue. Having it towed to my mechanic tomorrow for diagnostics. I have a feeling im not gonna like what he bas to say. And I just bought the truck two weeks ago with no signsof failure. It ran and sounded great. One morning fired it up and started knocking/tapping.

Stay tuned...

Some say it could be your cats. Grab a mallet, tap your cats, and see if you hear a rattle. If you bear a rattle your cataylist is shot. Hopefully, that's what your hearing.

Sorry to hear about your situation... I'm having mine towed tomorrow too and not looking forward to what they have to say either.

I tried the mallet and doesn't sound like the cats.. Thanks though!

What you are hearing could be piston slap comes from pistons just wearing out over time.if noise is at op temp i dont think it would be the oil pump.My advice to you is keep driving it engine rebuilds are 3000 bucks min.
