Humm... That could solve the lumber problem. Been baffled as to how I'm supposed to get lumber home since I gave up the pick up for the Rover.
Thanks for posing this.

What brand tent did you buy? Are you happy with it? Where did you get it?

Great minds think alike! I bought the exact same one from Northern Tool several years ago. I bought two sets and made similar mods. Not sure what I paid but they were dirt cheap. I could not sell my wife on one of those $1000+ systems. In so many ways I'm happier with this system than I would have been had I bought a real safari rack. It hauls lumber and sheet materials very well and is the primary reason I bought it (I am seldom out on safari). One lesson I learned is to give yourself plenty of clearance above the roof and existing factory installed rack system. I drilled the modified hole too far down. When I bought my new Disco which had sunroofs I had to raise the crossbars to allow enough room to open the rear one.

Default Awesome solution

Great solution to what can be an expensive problem . I want a roof top system but can't afford what out there. Thanks for sharing this. I am going to the Sand Rover rally next weekend and may have found the perfect solution for carrying gear up top.

I am thinking of getting these. Inexpensive enough to at least see is I like them. I may buy another set and manufacture my own rack platform off of these.

I've come back to this thread a few times. I just WANT a rack. I don't need one. I already have to be picky on parking garages and have scraped the signs a few times. But if I get one this will be the solution.

Really goes to show what stamping the word Thule or Land Rover on something adds to the price. Stamp Ford Van on it and it is dirt cheap and utterly indestructible.
