Default Left turn signal indicator in instrument cluster not working

2001 Disco 2 with 139ish K miles.

The left turn indicator arrow doesn't light up on the dash instrument cluster. The right turn indicator blinks (lights up and flashes) green as expected.

I can hear a relay clicking inside the dash, and both the front and rear left turn signals at the front and rear of the vehicle work correctly.

What inside the cluster makes these light up? Is it bulbs or integrated LEDs?

I see one removable bulb socket in the top back of the cluster, that seems about in the right location, but I don't understand how one bulb can work for two indicators that need to work independently like the left and right indicators.

I have a spare cluster (two actually) and could swap things from one to another to test, but I'd prefer to understand it first.

The full story is that this is a replacement cluster from an eBay seller. Everything else works except this. It might just be broken? However I'm trying to see if I can quickly resolve the issue at home rather than return it and start back at ground zero. It is otherwise everything I needed it to be.

The seller sent me a replacement that works as expected.
