So this morning I climb inside the Rover and notice a broken piece of black plastic with a metal clip attached under the right-hand side of the steering wheel on the floor mat. I looked everywhere to find out where it came from; underneath the dash, underneath the seat, I'm stumped. I hope the pics do justice (damn Blackberry camera)...and ideas?

 

Horn pads.
Check and make sure both horn buttons work.

 

x2 with what spike said. It happened to me a week ago while driving at night.. kinda weird. I went to hit the horn and the left horn button went boing! when I got the chance to pull over that piece was on the floor.. took a few minutes to put back into place and now all is well... for now!

 

Sorry guys, there must be another explanation of and application for this clip.

After seeing this thread today I got in the passenger side of my DII (new driver on the other side; pray for me, please) and found this same clip with the plastic shard attached in the forward area of the passenger footwell. I could have come from the horn buttons but it would have had to ricochet a lot to get to where I found it, plus the horn buttons are fine.

I'll grant that I have not looked to see where this may have come from, but the coincidence with the previous posts caused me to jump on this thread. I'll look tomorrow, and I'll also note that the truck was sitting outside in near 100° F ambient temps for the last couple of days (never before). That could cause me to blow a clip too!

 

Interesting mln01...I'm still searching as well...horn works fine...tomorrow I will grab the torch and inspect on the passenger side...good idea.

 

Ever since I first saw the pictures, I have been trying to remember where I have seen a clip like that, because I am certain I have, disassembling something inside my vehicle.

Problem with drinking whilst making repairs: short term memory of fit and function remains intact, but long term memory of said repair gets fuzzy.

 

Kind of looks like the clip from the side covers on the windshield. You guys have any windshield work done? Those things are notorious for snapping off and it will have a little chuck of black plastic in it from the broken tab.

 

Not the clip from the A pillar trims. Those clips have a thicker lower portion, and on both sides of the clip. It will come to me eventually.
