Default License Plate lights not working -

I am gradually fixing, updating and undoing what previous owners have done over the past 20 years! One thing I have finally got around to is fixing the license plate lights which are not working. I ordered the service kit as the old ones were opaque and dirty - I replaced both fixtures, but no luck. I also checked the fuse(just in case!) but ok. I have a sense that there is no power getting to the lights. Just to clarify, does it matter which way the connectors go to the bulb holder? - any pointers for next steps? I would hate to have to take apart the door/handle unless it is needed for more investigation.

Firstly, check for power at the socket with a voltmeter or test light.

I had done this drill a few years ago. Replaced the bulb holders and covers/screws. I had a bulb that would blink from time to time. It didn't work/solve my issue. Found some write ups about the wiring rotting out. I replaced the wiring in the rear door. It was dried out and cracked in a few spots. Fixed my issue. Now have some nice bright LEDS in there. Good Luck
