Default Light problem

This may have been addressed before but since I'm new as of today....
I just bought a 2000 Discovery II and have a light problem that someone may know about.
Turning the headlight switch to position 1 turns on parking lights and markers along with dashboard lights. Turn to position 2 and the headlights come on but all the rest go off.
Anyone have any ideas on what is causing this?

There's either a fault with the contacts in your headlight switch (remediation- replace the stalk) or there is a fault in grounding circuit. Based off the symptoms you described above I would cautiously, but confidently gamble on a faulty stalk.

Does this happen all the time or just in the bitter cold?

Dis assemble the stalk and clean contacts, re assemble and test.

Forum search function works fairly well and you should find previously recommended stalk clearing procedure.

I couldn't tell you whether hot or cold since I just got it and I'm in MT and it's still winter.

I'll give cleaning the stalk a try.

Thanks for the quick responses.

And thanks for the search suggestion. I found a thread that describes the same issue.

I originally took the stalk off and cleaned the contacts as suggested in other threads but that only lasted about 2 weeks. I found a new stalk on Amazon for about $50 (US) and replaced it. No problems since.
