As mentioned, check youtube for videos of Discos with CDL and TC (no dif lockers) wheeling.

You'll see plenty of what you will be getting into.

This depends how aggressive you want to get. Prices and variation of lockers vary.
My advice is get you D2 you want. Access all that it will need once you buy it.

I beg to disagree. There's been a couple times I've made it into the 15's, but NEVER into the 14's. Yes, I drive a lot, but even on weeks when I don't have my work commute (when I drive my other vehicle, or on vacation), I still get in the 16's on short city trips.

My other vehicle is a 1985 Ford F-250 with a carbureted big block 460. With a 4 speed manual and 4.11 gears, I still get no less than 10-11 mpg from it (empty), even running 3200rpm at 75mph highway speeds in top gear.

I just can't see how 10-14 MPG can be made a blanket statement for these vehicles. Everyone's driving is different, but the fact that I've never even crossed into 14mpg territory (no matter what type of driving) tells me this ain't right....

Oh, and the record that got 15.7mpg was when I filled up partway with E85 (notice the much cheaper fuel) - less energy density = less MPG.

As someone on another thread long ago stated,

High range no CDL lock is good enough to get you most everywhere,

Low range and CDL are good enough to get you back.

It's called acar. The free version is pretty nice, but I paid the extra $5 (or whatever it is) to get automatic backups and a few other features.

What is the best setup for serious offroading? How reliable are these rigs?

If you expect to do "serious offroading", DON"T get a HSE! These are Laguna Nigel soccer mom LRs. More electronics, more problems...unless you need the back up sensors when you're rock climbing...

Go simple...the S has the vinyl interior and 16" wheels.
