Default Loud Clunk Shifting from Park to Reverse...

2002 Disco ll 175K Miles

This just started today.Really loud Clunk!!! when shifting from from Park to Reverse. Also feeling some vibration and noise while driving. I Know the problem must be in the drive line somewhere. Maybe the Transfer case, U-Joint or Transmission? Wondering where and how to start trouble shooting.

Thanks
Scootch

Default Front drive shaft~

Hey there,

I didn't check your signature line or review your post count. BUT, in case you haven't come across it yet. The double cardan joint on the front drive shaft is prone to failure, as are the OEM u-joints. Failure is catastrophic and can often result in the destruction of the transmission and engine oil pan.

1) stop driving the car, at least on the freeway.
2) get the front driveshaft rebuilt with serviceable u-joints and double cardan

Lots of posts on the topic on this and other sights. I went with an aftermarket front driveshaft from Dynamic Driveline in KS (I think.)

crawl under her, check the double u joint by the transfer case if there is any play in it, time to get a new drive shaft or to get yours rebuilt.

if you have already replaced your driveshaft then the next thing it would be is transfer case. i know that they are supposed to have a slight clunk since they use gears instead of chains.

I found a rebuilt front prop shaft from Toddco Suspensions Inc in Georgia on sale for 279.95 less 60.00 for prepaid return shipping of the core. Sounds like a good deal.
what do you guys think? Has anyone dealt with these people in the past.

I think a rebuild is better value for the money. Be sure to get one with joints that can be greased, unlike the original (most are result and sold this way these days). Just my 2 cents worth.

Don't buy used or from a junk yard...
