I was in a convoy with others in D2's in low range, and they were just fine.

There was a time one summer when my newly installed Ashcroft transfer case was stuck in low a few times, including a trip to Yukon/Alaska. It was due to an frequently jammed up hi-low shift mechanism that took that summer to sort out. I have had to traverse a few hundred miles in stuck low gear to civilization a few times that summer. This unit started wearing out after 3 years and had to be replaced last year (increasingly loud high pitched whine - worn bearing and/or gears). We do fairly remote runs. I did not want to chance being stuck in nowhere with a failed t/case.

A friend who is an old timer with 35+ years of LR experience mentioned best to not let low gear rev past 2,500 rpm for long periods. This could case premature wear from overheating.

I still have this old unit in my shed. I have not had the chance to take it apart to do a final diagnosis. But, I am being more careful this time.
