So I took the disco off roading for the first time and had a blast this past weekend. Nothing crazy, just a rocky couple mile loop. However on the way home after driving about 45 minutes on the highway, the m + s lights started flashing and I was stuck in limp mode/4th gear. Got home and noticed I’m leaking oil from the front driver side of the engine as well. When I turn the truck off and restart it, the m and s flash goes away until around 10-15 minutes of driving it then it pops back up and goes in limp mode again. My ultragauge doesn’t show any codes regardless if it’s on or not.
Based on what I read on here, I had the battery (4 years old) checked first at advanced auto. The guy said the battery was good but the alternator could be going bad. 14 vs 12 amps. He did say his tool is rather basic and to get it double checked somewhere else. I also sprayed down the XYZ switch with wd40 and it didn’t feel loose.
I took it up to my LR mechanic this morning to have the leak assessed and to scan for codes. Unfortunately I turned the truck off and back on at a stop light in order to get there easier so the m and s wasn’t on when he scanned it. No codes popped up on his scanner.
Was wondering if anyone has had this issue where the m and s starts after driving for some time and not immediately on start up. The truck starts right up and the lights don’t come on for 10-15 minutes of driving which makes me think it’s the alternator going bad. Thanks!
M+S can be battery related. Check that your terminals are tight/clean and grounds are clean (alt. and shock tower). There is some great advice in the thread linked below on solutions. The OP had cooked his starter and had ground issues but other BM's commented on Alternator voltage numbers. We covered battery terminal/ground importance for M+S issues.

I've got the inverse problem really. The M&S Light seems to be selective about when it appears but only ever at startup. On a cold start while in park, all is well, and only sometimes does it appear while putting the truck into reverse or drive after that first start. If I get lucky in a morning though and it doesn't appear, the truck drives without issues and the lights never appear while going down the road.

If only. Battery replaced last night and the issue remains. I’m hoping my ECU was just off on some bender last night and didn’t notice the battery swap. So perhaps today will bring some good news.
