I've seen posts here claiming that "every" 4.6 will suffer a dropped sleeve or porous block behind a liner sooner or later. Wanted to start a thread for 03-04 owners out of curiousity, how many miles have you clocked on your original block without a failure? Would be nice to see some real world data that these blocks can last if taken care of.


I'll start off with the stats on mine, 03 with 140k on the original block, currently undergoing a head gasket repair to correct a slow coolant leak. Otherwise still a solid engine, no noises and no overheating/air in the cooling system.


If you own an 03-04, I'd appreciate your input, thanks.

 

126k, dropped a sleeve in my '03. Currently putting a Cannibal V8 in., oil cooler, and low temp thermostat.

I think it is hit and miss!

 

78k, 138k, and 120k.

I truly believe if it doesn't overheat you are good.

 

The 138k is a 4.6 Range Rover P38, if that makes a difference.

 

I know TriarII has over 140k on his. Engine sounds good, too.

 

P38's don't count. From everything I've read, LR still cared when they made those blocks. I had over 130k on my 1999 P38 4.6 and that engine sounded like brand new when I sold it. It was completely silent. They just milked the last little bit out of the molds and production to come up with enough engines for the 03s and 04s.

 

In have an 03 with 145K+ that started ticking around 100K I put in a 180 t-stat and it quit. It was a liner that was moving cause when I did my head gaskets at 141K i looked at the bottom of the sleeves and one was a little higher than the others. not at the top but at the bottom. it was flush at the top. Wasn't pressed in all the way from the factory. No leaks behind the liner though.
I have another 03 with 110K and sleeves are good in it.

 

140 k on a 03 in the death vin range, no ticks runs great but feel like I'm driving on borrowed time.

 

i got 122 out of mine, and probably would have gotten a lpt more had I serviced the cooling system regularly and specifically the thermostat.

 

I'm at 132k right now with no issues except HG and lifters (engine wise). She's racking them up quick, being my daily driver.
