Default Money best spent curing codes PO174 & PO171

(I look forward to the day I start a post here without) I'm broke.

I have codes PO171 & PO174 - "lean on left & right banks."

I really want to drive my Rover just once without the check engine light on.

Is there a way to know if this is the MAF or ONE of the four O2 sensors?

It kills me that I might spend $200 plus for a new MAF and then still have that light. Or have to buy 4 new O2 sensors when maybe just one is faulty?

As always, THANKS you guys. I feel like ya all are good friends.

I feel your pain brother. The fact that BOTH banks are running lean indicates to me that it is not a O2 sensor issue. If it were one bank, then yes a possible O2 issue. The only accurate way to know for sure would be to hook a scanner up to it and see what kind of output the MAF is producing. I do however feel this is not an O2 sensor related issue. If it were an O2 sensor problem you might see it on one bank, but not likely both banks at the same time. Mileage? How is it running otherwise?

I like the idea of getting just the guts for the MAF.

98roverguy - It seems to be running fine. It's at 2001 with 101K. I have only had it since 99K and had to get the headgasket done right away. If it is real damp out, it runs rough till it warms up but then it's fine. This is my first Disco so I'm not really sure how it's supposed to run, but I had a MAF go bad on my last car and it was very, very obvious. My Disco seems fine though? Confusing.

I did everything on Mike 60K list except wires. They are STS on there right now and I know that isn't good. I just can't afford the Magnacors right now because I wasn't expecting the 2K headgasket job. That's what screwe me. But I did do everything else on the list including the Seaform in the gas and the induction cleaning. I have had Auto Zone clear the codes before and then after more than once yet the PO171 and PO174 keep coming back.

I don't know.

If it still runs rough when damp out then your wires sound like they are bad. If you cannot afford magnacors (they are $85 from apex performance) then buy kingsborne wires. After the wires I would replace the MAF. If your O2 sensors were bad I would expect to see at least another O2 sensor specific code. Rent a scanner from autozone that reads live data and see what the O2 sensor voltages are reading and also what the MAF value is. At this point you are probably getting atrocious fuel economy because of the lean condition so you really cannot afford to sit around and do nothing.

Thanks lipadj46. That is how I will proceed.

I haven't checked my actual MPG but it does seem really, really bad.

I'll do the Autozone scanner rental and report back soon.

To give your wires a quick test take a spray bottle of water and mist the wire connections (in the dark) and see if you see arching.
